In June, ocean freight rates climbed to a new high, more than 200% higher than last year. How can you get the most out of container space and save on your delivery cost? Here are V-Trust’s suggestions.
1. Use loading software to get more cartons into containers. Some software can calculate max. space usage and help to load cartons more economically, such as EasyCargo, LoadMaster, etc.
2. Re-design the carton sizes. With special, size-designed cartons, the volume utilization rate of containers can be easily increased by 5% - 10%.Take a 40ft container for example. The inner size of a standard 40GP container is L1202cm*W235cm*H238cm. The ideal carton sizes should follow the below formula:
Carton Length = (1202cm – N1 x 2cm) / N1
Carton Width = (235cm – N2 x 1.5cm) / N2
Carton Height = (238cm – N3 x 1cm) / N3
* N is the carton quantity to load in the direction of container’s length, width and height respectively.
* 2cm, 1.5cm and 1cm is the reserved gap between each carton for length, width and height respectively.
Example: if N3 = 6 (6 layers high), the ideal carton height is (238cm – 6 x 1cm) / 6 = 38.7cmIf N3 = 7, the ideal carton height is (238cm – 7 x 1cm) / 7 = 33cmIf N3 = 8, the ideal carton height is (238cm – 8 x 1cm) / 8 = 28.8cmSo, if your carton’s height is around 30 – 40cm, you should choose from 29cm, 33cm or 39cm instead of other sizes to avoid the space loss.Feel free to contact us to get the list of optimal carton size to fit different containers.
3. Take the carton size into consideration when designing a product. Based on the ideal carton size, adjust the size and quantity of inner packages, or even change the product’s size in your next production run.
